Invisible Hitchhikers: Delhi’s Air Pollution Doubles Pathogenic Bacteria, Raising New Urban Health Risks

Delhi isn’t just suffocating under smog; it’s also hosting a hidden microscopic traffic jam of airborne bacteria. The Bose Institute team showed that these bacteria, many of which can cause respiratory, gut, oral, and skin infections, are twice as common in crowded parts of the city compared to less populated ones.

The main culprit is PM2.5—tiny particles of dust and pollution. Think of them as taxis for microbes: too small to see, small enough to enter lungs, and sticky enough to carry bacteria deep inside the body.

The Indo-Gangetic Plain (where Delhi sits) is already a perfect trap. In winter, western disturbances bring cold air and high humidity. That makes winds sluggish, keeps pollution near the ground, and reduces the boundary layer (the mixing space for air above the city). This stagnant soup means not only pollution builds up, but bacteria hitching rides on those particles linger longer too.

The scary part: the risk peaks during transitions—from winter to summer, or on hazy and rainy winter days. These are windows when pathogens thrive in the air for longer periods.
