A recent study has revealed that Sookshma Meditation, a gentle yoga-based meditation technique, can help school children reduce internet addiction, improve emotional regulation, and enhance mindfulness.
Sookshma Meditation, meaning “subtle meditation” in Sanskrit, emphasizes gentle breathing exercises, body awareness, and mind-focused techniques. It trains children to stay present, notice their thoughts and emotions, and calm their minds through simple, structured daily exercises.
In the study, 80 students aged 12 to 14 were randomly assigned to either a meditation program or a control group following their normal daily routine. The meditation group practiced Sookshma Meditation for 30 minutes daily, five days a week, over four weeks.
The results were significant. Children in the meditation group showed a marked reduction in internet addiction and improvements in emotional regulation strategies, including better cognitive reappraisal and reduced expressive suppression. Their mindfulness levels also increased compared to the control group.
The researchers highlighted that incorporating meditation into school routines could be a simple and effective way to help children manage screen time and enhance emotional well-being. While the study was short-term, the findings encourage larger, long-term studies to validate these benefits.
