Driving India’s Electronics Future: ECMS Approves First 7 Projects Worth ₹5,532 Crore

India’s journey toward becoming a global electronics powerhouse gained a fresh push as the government approved the first seven projects under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), with a combined investment of ₹5,532 crore. These projects are expected to generate an impressive ₹44,406 crore in production output and create 5,195 new jobs.

Announcing the approvals, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move would accelerate India’s electronics value chain and reduce import dependence on critical components. The ECMS aims to build a strong domestic base for high-value electronic components, supporting the country’s rapid rise in manufacturing capacity.

India’s Electronics Growth Story

Over the past decade, India’s electronics sector has evolved from an import-dependent industry to one of the world’s most dynamic manufacturing ecosystems. The sector is now India’s third largest export category, recording a massive growth from ₹38,000 crore in 2014–15 to ₹3.27 lakh crore in 2024–25 — an eight-fold increase.

Electronics production has surged six times in the same period, from ₹1.9 lakh crore to ₹11.3 lakh crore, while employment has expanded by nearly 25 lakh jobs nationwide.

Mobile manufacturing has been at the heart of this growth, scaling from ₹18,000 crore in 2014–15 to ₹5.45 lakh crore in 2024–25. India has become the world’s second-largest mobile phone producer, housing more than 300 factories, compared to just two a decade ago.

In FY 2024–25, mobile phone exports alone crossed ₹2 lakh crore, with Apple exporting iPhones worth ₹1.1 lakh crore, marking a 42% year-on-year growth.

About the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS)

Launched on 8 April 2025 with an outlay of ₹22,919 crore, the ECMS is designed to strengthen India’s electronics component ecosystem. The six-year scheme seeks to:

  • Attract global and domestic investment
  • Promote value addition and indigenous innovation
  • Build self-reliance in high-end component production
  • Integrate India into global electronics value chains

So far, investment commitments under the ECMS have reached ₹1.15 lakh crore, nearly double the target. Expected production from these projects stands at ₹10.34 lakh crore, with the potential to create over 1.4 lakh direct jobs.

Details of the Approved Projects

The newly approved projects are spread across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, focusing on key technologies like multi-layer and HDI printed circuit boards (PCBs), camera module assemblies, laminates, and polypropylene film—components essential for smartphones, automobiles, medical devices, and telecom systems.

Strengthening India’s Value Chain

These projects represent a significant leap in India’s ability to manufacture high-value components domestically. Products such as camera modules, PCBs, laminates, and polypropylene films are critical inputs in consumer electronics, telecommunications, automotive, and aerospace industries.

By scaling up such component manufacturing, India is positioning itself as a trusted global hub for electronics production and exports.

Conclusion

The approval of the first set of ECMS projects is more than a policy milestone—it signals India’s transformation from an assembly destination to a full-fledged manufacturing powerhouse.

With expanding exports, growing domestic capability, and strong policy support, India’s electronics industry is poised to power not just its own economy but also the global supply chain. The country is now firmly on track to realize its vision of becoming a global hub for advanced electronics manufacturing.
