India’s Semiconductor Dream Nears Reality: PM Modi’s Red Fort Breakthrough
n his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on a vision that began nearly six decades ago but never saw the light of day—India’s own semiconductor manufacturing industry.
“The idea of setting up a semiconductor factory in our country first came 50-60 years ago,” the Prime Minister said. “But it remained stuck in files and meetings. At that time, the thought of semiconductors faced a feticide… we lost decades while other nations advanced and strengthened their economies through technology.”
PM Modi stressed that the 21st century is being shaped by technology, and countries that master it will lead the world. “We have freed ourselves from that past burden and taken up the semiconductor mission with full force. Six units are already under construction, and four more have just been approved. By the end of this year, chips made in India by the people of India will be in the market,” he declared.

Four New Plants Approved
Earlier this week, the Union Cabinet gave the green light to four new semiconductor assembly and testing projects under the India Semiconductor Mission, with a combined investment of Rs 4,594 crore. These facilities will be located in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh:(https://indianexpress.com/article/business/pm-modi-made-in-india-chips-end-of-2025-indigenous-social-media-tech-platforms-10190716/)
| Company | Location | Project Type | Investment (Rs crore) | Key Products |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SiCSem Pvt Ltd | Bhubaneswar, Odisha | Assembly & Testing (ATMP) | 2,066 | Silicon Carbide diodes & MOSFETs |
| 3D Glass Solutions Inc. | Bhubaneswar, Odisha | ATMP & Advanced Packaging | 1,943 | Glass-based interposers, 3DHI modules |
| ASIP Technologies | Andhra Pradesh | Semiconductor Manufacturing | — | Mobile, automotive & electronics chips |
| Continental Device India Ltd (CDIL) | Mohali, Punjab | Expansion of semiconductor manufacturing | — | High-power devices (MOSFETs, IGBTs) |
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that 3D Glass Solutions’ project includes investments from global names like Intel and Lockheed Martin, as well as venture capital and private equity funds.
A Growing Semiconductor Ecosystem
These approvals bring the total number of government-supported chip-related projects in India to 10. The list includes major players such as Tata-PSMC’s $11 billion fabrication facility, Micron Technology’s assembly plant, and ventures by HCL-Foxconn, Kaynes Semicon, and CG Power with Japan’s Renesas.
Call for Indigenous Technology
The Prime Minister also urged India’s youth to innovate beyond hardware. Citing the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which now powers over half of the world’s real-time digital transactions, he encouraged young entrepreneurs to create homegrown platforms for the creative and social media sectors.
“Why should we be dependent on others? Why should India’s wealth go overseas?” he asked.
With the new projects, India is positioning itself not only to meet its domestic semiconductor demand but also to compete globally, marking a historic shift from a long-standing dream to an active reality.
