India Boosts Semiconductor Mission: Student-Designed Chips Fabricated at SCL Mohali Handed Over by IT Minister
The Minister for Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, visited the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali on 28 November 2025. During the visit, he handed over 28 chips that were designed by students from 17 colleges under the Chips to Startup (C2S) Programme and made at SCL Mohali. These included 600 bare dies and 600 packaged chips.
The government says India is quickly becoming strong in chip design and aims to be a major semiconductor hub. Many colleges now have access to advanced chip-design tools through the ChipIN Centre at C-DAC Bengaluru. This centre helps students design chips, checks if they are ready for fabrication, and sends many designs together to SCL Mohali to save time and money.
In the last year:
• 5 chip-fabrication runs were done at SCL
• 122 designs submitted by 46 institutions
• 56 chips already manufactured and delivered
More than 1 lakh students and 90 startups have used these design tools heavily, which shows a growing chip ecosystem in India. The minister said India wants to become self-reliant in strategic technology like semiconductors, and SCL Mohali will be an important part of this plan. This news highlights progress in India’s semiconductor mission through education, research, and domestic manufacturing.
