Government of India Notifies National Policy on Geothermal Energy (2025) . Supporting India’s Net Zero 2070 Commitment
The Government of India has notified the National Policy on Geothermal Energy (2025), reinforcing its commitment to the Net Zero 2070 target and strengthening national energy security through clean and diversified sources.
The policy provides a comprehensive framework for exploration, development, and utilization of geothermal resources, positioning geothermal energy as a reliable and sustainable complement to solar and wind power.
Key Highlights of the National Policy on Geothermal Energy (2025)
Integration with National Goals: Aligns geothermal energy with India’s renewable energy and Net Zero commitments.
Applications: Power generation, district heating, agriculture (greenhouses, cold storage), aquaculture, tourism, and space cooling/heating through Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs).
Research & Innovation: Promotes R&D in advanced technologies such as hybrid geothermal-solar systems, Enhanced/Advanced Geothermal Systems (EGS/AGS), and retrofitting abandoned oil wells.
Ecosystem Development: Encourages public-private partnerships, international collaborations, and inter-ministerial coordination to build a robust geothermal ecosystem.
Capacity Building: Focus on skill development, local innovation, and knowledge sharing to create specialized human resources in the geothermal sector.
As a first step, five pilot projects have been sanctioned across India for geothermal exploration and resource assessment. These projects will evaluate the viability and potential of geothermal energy in diverse geographies.
